Basically,it is a document that maps user requirements with the test cases. The main motive of  traceability matrix is all test cases are covered so that no functionality should missed during testing ie called  as a RTM(requirement traceability matrix)

RTM Parameters includes:-

1)Requirement ID

2)Risks

3)System test cases

4)Unit test cases

5)Trace to test script

6)Trace to design specification

Types of Traceability Matrix

1)Forward Traceability Matrix-Basically it maps requirements to test cases. In other words, the matrix is used to check whether project is in right direction  or not and for the right productso that each rquirement is applied to the product and each requirement is tested thoroughly

2)Backward and reverse Traceability Matrix-It maps test cases to requirements. The main motive behind this is that the scope of project is not expanded in  terms of design or code,in other words we are not adding anything additionally that are not mention in requirements. It ensures that current product is in right direction

3)Bidirectional Traceability Matrix- Combination of above two.All requirements are covered by test cases. It analyze the  change in enviroment which is caused by the defect in the project.

Advantages of RTM

1)It confirms 100 percent  test coverage

2)It highlights any requirements that are missing

3)It shows execution status  with a focus on business requirements

4)It helps in estimating the impact on QA team work with respect to  reworking on the test cases
