How To Set Up Dolby Atmos Or Surround Sound On Your Apple TV

Apple TV is a powerful streaming media console that is designed to deliver outstanding TV viewing experience with exceptional sound quality. As you might already know, Apple TV 4K supports Dolby Atmos and Surround Sound, so you can listen to the audio in highest quality. As a matter of fact, Apple TV 4K automatically plays audio in highest quality based on the capabilities of your home entertainment device. However, it’s important that your Home entertainment system also supports the same.

So in case your home entertainment system doesn’t support the audio format, you can also change it manually. To do that, go to Settings > Video & Audio > Audio Format > Change Format. Once you turn on Change Format, you can choose from two options.

• Dolby Digital 5.1
• Stereo

If you select the first option, it will play audio on multiple speakers and a subwoofer, providing an immersive sound experience with a three-dimensional touch.

Selecting the second option will simply play audio in supported quality through either left or right channel.

How To Set Up Dolby Atmos?

Apple TV 4K supports Dolby Atmos and Surround Sound to give an immersive sound experience exuding audio in all directions in three-dimensional space.

To play all sounds on your Apple TV 4K in Dolby Atmos, first you need to set up your home entertainment system for high-quality audio. So here’s how you can do that.

If your home entertainment device doesn’t support Dolby Atmos, you’ll either need a Dolby Atmos enabled sound bar or the Dolby Atmos enabled AV receiver. The former plays sound in Dolby Atmos without the need of an AV receiver or extra speakers while the latter requires multiple speakers for the same.

Note: You might need to run a firmware update in several AV receivers & sound bars in order to support Dolby Atmos. You may visit the manufacturer’s website to know the details.

Once you have the required accessories, you can proceed with the following steps.

• Connect your Apple TV 4K with the HDMI input of the sound bar or AV receiver with the help of an HDMI cable.
• Connect the soundbar or AV receiver with the television (if it supports Dolby Atmos pass-through to sound bars and receivers) using an HDMI cable.

Once you’ve done that, you can also check if your Apple TV is configured for Dolby Atmos or not. Just go to Settings > Video and Audio and select Audio Format. Under the Atmospheric Audio tab, check if Dolby Atmos is enabled or not. Alas, if you don’t even see that option, you might need to check your configurations again.
